Tallahassee Police Make Arrest in West Pensacola Street Shooting
June 23, 2023
On June 23, the Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) arrested one suspect in connection to the shooting that occurred on June 22 in the parking lot of the McDonald's, located at 2026 West Pensacola Street.
During the ensuing investigation, TPD quickly identified the suspect vehicle and notified additional law enforcement. Shortly after, the vehicle was located by the Leon County Sheriff's Office who conducted a traffic stop and detained the driver.
Following a swift and thorough investigation by TPD's Violent Crimes Unit, it was determined a group of individuals were involved in a verbal dispute on the basketball courts adjacent to the Palmer Munroe Teen Center. An off duty officer working at the center saw the group and attempted to make contact, but they dispersed in vehicles before he could engage with them. The group then went to McDonald's where two men continued arguing in the parking lot. During the interaction, one of the individuals, Trenton Tompkins, produced a firearm and shot the other man who died on-scene. Tompkins then turned toward another involved juvenile male, and in fear for his life, the juvenile shot Tompkins who succumbed to his injuries. The juvenile fled the scene in a vehicle and was ultimately detained by law enforcement shortly after.
Preliminary findings indicate this could be a Stand Your Ground case; however, the case remains open and active pending further investigation. At this time, the juvenile is being charged with possession of a firearm by a delinquent and tampering with physical evidence.
This swift arrest is a testament to law enforcement agencies working quickly and collaboratively to keep the public safe. If you see something, say something. Report criminal activity by calling TPD at 850-891-4200. You can also remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 850-574-TIPS.
